USE THE MILITARY

I REFER 10 an article (Mail, March 9). - "Call for summit on drugs". I
congratulate and support Cr Neil Rose for his concern and thus his call for
a summit to address the growing drug problem in the eastern suburbs of
Melbourne.

Wbile I agree with Prime Minister John Howard that heroin trials are like
giving alcoholics more liquor in a saloon bar on the Australian tax-payers'
money, to help Cr Rose to address the huge drug problem in the eastern
suburbs, for the proposed summit I make the following recommendations as
agenda items.

To take action on the cause and not the symptom, we should use the
Australian military forces to police Australia's huge coastline, which is an
open door for drug importation.

When drug traffickers are caught, their punishment should fit their crime,
as in some Asian countries.

Support our state and federal governments to effectively address the current
breakdown in family and community responsibility, which is half the problem.

What our young people must remember is that they/we are healthy but once.

Steve Raskovy,
Norman Rd,
