SMUGGLERS GET PROBATION

Two people who hauled 70 pounds of marijuana into Salt Lake City on a
Greyhound bus received probation after their cases were inadvertently
treated as lesser crimes by prosecutors and judges.

Jose Amador Carrillo, 23, and Cindy Rangel, 23, initially were charged
with one count each of third-degree felony unlawful possession of a
controlled substance with intent to distribute. But prosecutors later
mistook the case for routine drug possession and allowed the
defendants to plead guilty to class A misdemeanors. Two 3rd District
Court judges ordered probation. "With the massive amount of cases we
deal with, the case didn't get the attention it deserved," said Deputy
Salt Lake District Attorney Kent Morgan. "We will closely monitor
their probationary periods."
