GARDAI STRIKE BLOW AGAINST DEALERS BY SEIZING DRUGS WORTH IEP400,000

GARDAI recovered drugs estimated to be worth IEP400,000 during two
large finds over the weekend in Dublin and Cork.

Detectives from Mitchelstown and Fermoy found a medium-size quantity
of cannabis during a search operation of a wooded area in north Cork
on Saturday afternoon following a number of reports of unusual
activity in the area during the past month. Several eye-witnesses had
informed local gardaED that they had seen people behaving
suspiciously on different occasions.

The discovery was made in a wooded area between Kilworth and
Ballyporeen.

Ten kilogrammes of cannabis resin with a street value of around
IEP100,000 were found buried in an area of woodland known as Mountain
Barracks. It is believed that the location was being used as a hiding
place by a local drug dealer.

Although no arrests were made in connection with the cannabis find,
Garda believe it will cause major disruption to illegal drug supplies
in the north Cork area.

Meanwhile, gardai in Dublin uncovered a large quantity of drugs with a
street value of IEP300,000 in Dublin Port on Saturday night.
Detectives from Kevin Street and Kilmainham made the find as part of
an on-going investigation into drug gangs in the city.

The haul in the capital consisted mainly of diamorphine as well as a
smaller quantity of cocaine.

A man in his thirties was arrested under Section 2 of the Drugs
Trafficking Act 1996.

He is currently being questioned at Kilmainham garda station where he
can be held for a maximum of seven days.
