COCAINE FACTORY FOUND IN JUNGLE
Columbian police claimed their biggest victory of the drugs war when they
uncovered a cocaine factory, operating under a jungle canopy in the central
Magdalena region and producing more than eight tons of cocaine a month.
The detection of the site in the rainforest of Cimitarra, 100 miles north of
Bogota, confirms American warnings that drug warlords are using remote
jungle areas to make cocaine in industrial proportions. The laboratory was
detected with the help of satellite images provided to the Colombian police
by the US Drugs Enforcement Agency.
A 300-member anti-drugs squad, backed up by ten US-donated Huey helicopters,
raided the complex to find more than a ton of pure cocaine and 150 tons of
partially processed drugs and chemicals. The complex had generators capable
of supplying a town of 5,000 people.
