BANNING GUNS WOULD WORK AS WELL AS PROHIBITION DID
In response to "Should gun laws be tougher?" (May 1 Viewpoint):
The debate on gun laws neglected to discuss the one indisputable fact that
relates to banning and/or "control." In a largely free and free-enterprise
society, it won't work any better than previous attempts that have been made
to deny other things, for whatever reasons, to the U.S. population.
After banning or "control," guns will be as hard to buy and as unaffordable
as crack cocaine or marijuana are now or alcoholic beverages were during
Prohibition.
Factories are no longer necessary to produce handguns. One
computer-controlled milling machine, of which the nation has tens of
thousands, could make hundreds per year.
DUI has not been declining because we attacked automobiles or liquor, but
because we went after personal anti-social behavior. Let's be just as smart
with our violence problems.
