BLUE LOOS TO FLUSH OUT DRUGGIES

BRISBANE'S red light district of Fortitude Valley will become a blue light
district.

At the encouragement of police, toilets in some pubs and clubs are being
fitted with blue lights.

Blue loos are the latest weapon against intravenous drug use in lavatories.

Police say the blue light makes it virtually impossible for heroin users to
see the vein they want to inject.

Short of carrying a torch, addicts are forced to inject elsewhere. Several
Valley establishments have already fitted blue lights.

Fortitude Valley Divisional Commander Paul Wilson said the move was part of
a plan to re-light the area to deter crime.

However Bill Rutkin, a spokesman for the Queensland Intravenous Aids
Association, said they would only move intravenous drug use from toilets to
back alleys.
