'TEENS WHO READ PROVIDENCE SECTION WILL REALIZE THE DAMAGES DRUGS DO'

Dear Province:

My Grade 12 communications students at Yale secondary in Abbotsford enjoyed
the recent pullout about heroin addiction very much. Some of the articles
led to some very interesting discussions.

The articles had an impact on my students -- this was the desired result.

Dorothy Fitch, teacher

I found the articles very chilling and I think it's so scary that so many
of our youth have fallen victim to heroin and other cruel drugs of its
nature. These articles have convinced me never to experiment with drugs of
that calibre. It was a series of articles I will never forget.

Will Meshen

The most effective part of the section was the article on Jade Bell. That
article alone made me realize that drugs are not what they seem. I will
always remember that pullout section because it had a great impact on my life.

Courtenay Stewart

The special section was very informative because of the chart in the
middle. I would like to thank the writers on a good job they have done and
I know they will do a good job in the future.

Justin Morris

Seeing Jade Bell -- who is now paralyzed, blind and unable to speak -- has
scared me to even think about doing heroin. Your paper had a real positive
effect on me and my class. I also enjoyed the insert which tells me
everything about drugs and their code names.

Ashley Bennee

I hope other schools received the 16-page special section. It was full of
really good information and I hope lots of people read it and realize just
how dangerous and sad the addiction to the drug can be. I hope this pullout
had a great impact on everyone who read it.

Jennette Silver

The pullout section on heroin was very valuable to me and my fellow
students. Personally, I now know more of what most drugs are like and what
they do. Now that people have read about heroin, I think it will give them
a second view on using it or maybe even how to deal with their addiction. I
have many friends who have a heroin addiction and this section makes me
want to help those friends. I never knew heroin could be so dangerous.

Bobbi Frolek

The special section on heroin was very strong and educated us on the
dangers and the long-term effects of drugs like heroin and cocaine. I think
this will teach children and adults about the dangers and effects of
cocaine and heroin. Maybe it will even save some children or adults from
their drug addictions.

Josh Masse

The article that caught my eye was the one where you listed the drugs and
their short and long-term effects. I think that if teens look at this
article they will realize what damage these drugs can do to their bodies.

Jeremy Weber

Reading the story about Jade Bell made me realize just what heroin can
really do to someone. I really enjoyed the page with all the different
drugs listed and the effects they have on you. Showing kids what can happen
when they choose to do a drug might scare them away from trying them.
Hopefully it will make at least one person think twice before they try a
drug that could kill them.

Lynette Grillandini

I think it was a great idea for your newspaper to have such a section. I
found it very informative and enlightening. I believe that articles which
effect people at a young age are important for us. It also gave us
important information about how and where people can get help.

Shakti Bath

I feel these articles had a big impact on the students who read them at our
school. After reading this, it made you think about the drug problem that
exists at every school. This was used as somewhat of a scare tactic, and I
feel that it was well done. Now that I have read this, it will always be in
my mind whenever drugs appear.
