CAR SEIZED UNDER FORFEITURE LAW
ELMHURST -- A limited-edition Ford Taurus is the latest in a string of
vehicles and property Elmhurst police have seized from drug suspects under
state forfeiture laws.
The City Council voted last week to pay a $10,627 lien on the 1997 Taurus
SHO so the Police Department can add it to its vehicle fleet. The car is
valued at $19,700, has 33,000 miles on the odometer and is under warranty.
"This is a really good deal," said Public Safety Committee Chairman Phillip
Jordan.
The car was seized from a man who police suspect used it to transport
cocaine. Though he has not been convicted in DuPage County Circuit Court,
he did not contest the loss of his car at a forfeiture hearing last month,
said Detective Ray Bradford.
Elmhurst receives an average of $100,000 a year in cash and goods from
drug-related property forfeitures, Bradford said.
