N-PLANT TEST FOR ADDICTS

WORKERS at the Dounreay nuclear plant face random drug-testing it was
revealed yesterday.

And new staff will undergo screening from next month.

The policy follows a study by the UKAEA.

Dounreay is set to implement the testing for all staff by the end of the year.

Lynne Staples-Scott, communication manager for the United Kingdom Atomic
Energy Authority (UKAEA), said: 'Drug misuse is a growing problem and the
risk to our operational safety could be increasing.

'A number of other employers performing safety critical work have already
adopted new drugs policies.' The plant has been the focus of several safety
alerts. Bosses built a 20ft electric fence last year after SAS officers
exposed security lapses.

* Prison guards could soon be equipped with handheld drug tests now being
used by Australian traffic police. The Scottish Prison Service wants to
pilot it. The Rapiscan, produced by Oxford-based Cozart, tests saliva with
results in five minutes.
