FORMER SENATE AIDE, SPORTS REPORTER INDICTED

BOGOTA -- The Attorney General's Office on Wednesday indicted former Senate
Secretary Pedro Pumarejo and sports reporter Esteban Jaramillo on charges of
illicit enrichment from drug trafficking, court officials said Wednesday.

The Attorney General's Office decided to proceed with the accusations after
the two men were unable to satisfactorily account for large sums of money
deposited in their personal accounts.

Pumarejo, who served as Senate secretary from 1994 to 1996, was arrested
Sept. 1. He has been charged with illicit enrichment while holding a public
post, and is accused of cashing checks from Cali's dismantled cocaine
cartel. Jaramillo, arrested a month later, is also charged with cashing
checks from the Cali Cartel, checks he says were legitimate publicity payments.
