COLOMBIAN FORFEITURE SWEEP
BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) Federal anti-narcotics agents raided 176 properties
including luxurious antique-furnished homes belonging to imprisoned bosses
of the Cali drug cartel, authorities said Sunday.
In operations that began last week, agents took control of houses, ranches,
apartments and offices in 11 cities belonging to convicted drug traffickers
Gilberto and Miguel Rodriguez Orejuela.
The Rodriguez brothers were caught by police in 1995 and sentenced to 10 and
20 years in jail respectively.
The properties with an estimated value of $14.8 million had been registered
in the name of third parties, said the DAS state security agency.
Colombia enacted sweeping asset forfeiture legislation in 1996 that allowed
authorities to seize properties belonging to convicted drug traffickers.
