GARDAI NET 2 MILLION POUNDS DRUGS HAUL
'Breakthrough' As Cannabis Resin Seized In Raid On City Centre Flat
Drug squad officers made a "significant breakthrough" in the fight against
illegal drugs yesterday when cannabis worth almost pounds 2m was seized
during a swoop on a city centre apartment.
Members of the National Drugs Unit targeted the apartment in Limerick city
centre and seized 179 kilos of cannabis resin, with an estimated street
value of pounds 1.8m.
A 39-year-old man from the Limerick area was arrested and taken to a city
garda station for questioning. He is linked to a well-known republican in
the west Limerick area, gardai said.
It is believed the drugs had been recently transferred to the apartment for
distribution later in the region of Limerick, Clare and Galway.
The man can be detained initially for six hours but this can be extended by
up to seven days under anti-drugs legislation.
Det Supt Noel White of the Garda National Drugs Unit, based at Dublin
Castle, headed the operation in which officers converged on the apartment at
Mount Kennett Place and arrested the man.
They took possession of some 17 boxes containing 179 kilos of the illicit drugs.
The man was arrested under Section Two of the Drug Trafficking Act and taken
to nearby Henry Street garda station where he was being interviewed.
Det Supt White said that the cannabis seizure the biggest drugs haul so far
in the Limerick area constituted a "significant breakthrough" in the ongoing
fight by gardai against illicit drugs.
The seizure was also described as seriously damaging the operation of a
Limerick-based drugs gang.
The drug squad officers made their move on the apartment after weeks of
targeting drug-trafficking suspects in the Limerick area who had been
observed operating nearby earlier in the day.
Det Supt White said that for some time the National Drugs Unit and local
officers had been targeting criminal elements in the Limerick and Munster area.
He said their inquiries were ongoing and there would be no let-up in their
battle against illicit drugs.
