LEGAL EAGLES IN SAME COURT: BAILEY, BLACK

FORT PIERCE -- (AP) -- In the courtroom for a bond hearing in a $52 million
international drug case were two high-powered defense attorneys -- F. Lee
Bailey and Roy Black.

They were hired by a Stuart man and two others charged in the seizure of
more than three tons of marijuana and 1,200 pounds of hashish oil from a
sport fishing boat that docked behind a Stuart waterfront home.

The seizure was June 21.

U.S. and Canadian officials had the smuggling operation under investigation
for six months, according to U.S. Customs officials who worked with the
Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

They said the drugs were being smuggled from Jamaica by boat, then shipped
to Canada by tractor-trailer.

The alleged ringleader, Michael Provost, 43, of Stuart, hired Black to
defend him. Provost joins a list of past clients that includes William
Kennedy Smith and Marv Albert.

Sherre Dalton, 41, of Bucksport, Maine, and Teah Key, 57, of Quebec, have
hired F. Lee Bailey, whose former clients include O.J. Simpson and newspaper
heiress Patty Hearst.

Bailey says that his clients just happened to be present at the time of the
arrest and that there is scant evidence against them.

Provost was indicted on federal drug charges June 24, along with Dewayne
Dalton of Stuart; Annick Bertrand of Quebec; Serge Lauzon of Montreal; Steve
Heugel of Belmont, Mich.; and Jean and Victor Chiasson.

All, except for the Chiassons, were being held without bail Friday.
Information on the Chiassons' whereabouts was unavailable.
