GOULBURN HEMP SEEDS PRODUCE HIGH YIELDS

Yields of hemp seeds grown near Goulburn are among the highest in Australia.

Weather conditions are still delaying the harvesting of hemp fibre in a
project run by Goulburn City Council, but hemp seeds have been collected
and the results are promising.

Andrew Katalaris, director of Biological Products, the group managing the
Goulburn project, has predicted hemp seeds and fibre will become key
industries in Australia over the next 10-20 years.

"Hemp seed will probably find a very, very important niche in the health
food market," he said.

"It has a very high proportion of Omega 3 and 6 unsaturated fatty acids and
therefore exert a very useful cardiovascular effect when taken as a dietary
supplement."
