CUSTOMS WIGS OUT OVER COCAINE
TORONTO --Drug officers at Pearson Airport are still scratching their
heads after seizing two kilos of cocaine hidden in the wig of a
Toronto woman returning from Jamaica.
"This a first for us," said customs spokesman Mark Butler. "We've
never found such a quantity of coke in a wig."
Customs agents and the RCMP found the $400,000 worth of coke last week
after a detector dog became suspicious and flagged a 20-year-old
unemployed woman for a search.
Butler said officers were baffled after they didn't find drugs on the
woman's body. He said officers then became suspicious of the woman's
hair.
"We asked her if she was wearing a wig, which officers determined was
way too heavy," he said.
Butler said the coke was found sewn into the plastic-lined skullcap of
the wig.
"The client was relieved to have the heavy weight lifted off her
shoulders," Butler said. "It was pretty heavy."
He said the wig was "very well made" and could have been the work of
experts.
"We're seeing more inventive ways of people trying to smuggle drugs
into Canada," Butler said. "We'll be there to find it."
After the seizure, officers said the woman began complaining of a
headache from the two kilograms of drugs she was carrying on her head
during the four-hour flight.
RCMP Sgt. Len Lanza said the seizure was a first for his drug squad
officers.
"This is the first one like this I've seen," Lanza said. "This is not
something we come across every day."
Felicia Marie Campbell, of Toronto, has been charged with importing a
controlled substance.
