ARBITRATORS AWARD WEBBER $2.61 MILLION
Fila Usa Dropped Forward As Spokesman After Drug Incident
Sacramento Kings forward Chris Webber was awarded $2.61 million June 28 by a
three-member arbitration panel that ruled Fila USA, an athletic apparel
company, wrongfully terminated its endorsement contract with Webber last year.
Fila dropped Webber as a spokesman last August, after police at San Juan's
international airport in Puerto Rico found marijuana in a carry-on bag of
the former Washington Wizards star. Webber said the bag belonged to a
companion, but later paid a $500 fine and signed a statement acknowledging
possession of the drug.
The Baltimore-based arbitrators decided Webber did not violate the terms of
his contract with Fila.
"I am happy that the arbitrators fully and fairly considered all of the
evidence presented by my attorneys Fallisha Erwin and Steven Levy and ruled
in my favor," Webber said in a statement.
"I would like to put the matter behind me and move forward with my career."
Webber, who had one of the most productive seasons of his career in leading
the Kings to the playoffs last season, does not have any endorsement deals
with athletic apparel companies.
