THREE STILL MISSING FROM COLOMBIA CRASH
BOGOTA, Colombia - Rescue teams trekked through dense fog and thick
jungle Thursday as they hunted for the last three crew members killed
when a U.S. anti-drug plane slammed into a mountain in southern Colombia.
Four bodies -- all U.S. soldiers, including a woman -- were recovered
from the crash site about 7,000 feet up a mountain in southern
Putumayo Wednesday.
But a Colombian air force spokeswoman said Thursday there was still no
sign of the remains of a fifth American or of two Colombian air force
majors.
The Americans were believed to be the first U.S. troops to die in
Colombia's U.S.-backed war against spiraling cocaine and heroin production.
The de Havilland RC-7 reconnaissance plane disappeared before dawn
Friday during a mission over southeast Colombia. The wreckage was not
located until Sunday, and weather kept rescuers from reaching the area
until Tuesday.
