MEXICO'S DRUG CZAR UNINJURED AFTER GUNMEN FIRE AT CAR

MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Mexico's top anti-drug prosecutor escaped uninjured
after two men fired at his car Sunday. Two people were wounded.

Mariano Herran Salvatti and his wife were riding in a four-wheel drive
vehicle on a main street in Mexico City early Sunday afternoon when they
were fired on by two gunmen riding on motorcycles, he told reporters.
Herran's bodyguards exchanged fire with the gunmen.

One bodyguard and one of the gunmen were wounded.

Herran Salvatti, formerly Mexico City's chief prosecutor, was appointed drug
czar in March 1997 after his predecessor, Gen. Jesus Gutierrez Rebollo, was
arrested on charges he took payoffs from a major drug trafficker.
