HENRICO DEPUTY FACES COCAINE CONSPIRACY CHARGE
Federal authorities have arrested Michelle Campbell, a Henrico County
sheriff's deputy, on a charge of conspiracy to distribute crack and powder
cocaine.
Campbell and 14 other people have been indicted on drug charges in U.S.
District Court, sources said. She was denied bond at a detention hearing
this week and remains in custody.
Sources said the single count charged against Campbell involves information
regarding law enforcement activities that she passed to a member of a drug
gang. The indictment remained sealed yesterday pending the arrest of all 15
defendants named.
Campbell was a sworn deputy who worked in the jail's personnel department,
sources said. She has been with the sheriff's department since 1996.
Another Henrico sheriff's deputy, Duane M. Carter, pleaded guilty in June
to stealing a department gun and selling it to a felon. He pleaded no
contest to charges he supplied marijuana to inmates for about a year. He
worked as a jailer at the county's regional facility in New Kent County.
Carter is scheduled to be sentenced in Henrico Circuit Court next month.
