BE A GOOD REAGANITE, GEORGE (AND ALSO A GOOD CLINTONITE): SAY NO AS LONG AS
YOU CAN
I don't really care about George W. Bush's possible past cocaine use. I
don't believe I'll be voting for him in any event.
But it did occur to me that if he were smart, he would learn from Clinton.
Bush would call a press conference, look everyone in the eye, and say, "You
better listen to me, because I will only say this once. I . . . did not . .
. have . . . chemical . . . relations . . . with that drug. Not once. Never."
It would buy Bush about a year's worth of time, which is just about all he
needs to get to the election. And look at the benefits:
- -- He would be able to discern who his friends and foes were.
- -- His political opponents would waste expensive, valuable airtime
discussing the topic.
- -- Dozens of dangerous busybodies would be preoccupied investigating his
past instead of possibly doing some real damage somewhere else.
- -- The press and Bush's enemies would be demonized for creating Yet Another
Scandal.
- -- The portion of the public that didn't tune the press out either would
forgive him or just wouldn't care.
- -- And if he truly didn't use cocaine, he has nothing to fear anyway.
George: Be a good Reagan-era Republican. Just Say No!
