SENTENCE UNDER NEW LAW
A Houston man has been sentenced to 130 months in federal prison under a new
law that prohibits storage of a firearm near illegal drugs or drug money.
Before Congress passed the law last November, it was only illegal to
actually use or carry a gun during a drug-related transaction.
Javier Ceballos-Torres, 36, was convicted in June of possession with intent
to distribute about 570 grams of powdered cocaine and possession of a
firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking.
The cocaine was found concealed in a wall of a closet during a search in his
Houston apartment in February. A semiautomatic pistol was found lying on a
bed near where the drugs were found.
