WOMAN WHO CALLED FOR HELP ARRESTED, TOO

WILLIAMSBURG - A woman who called 911 to report a sexual assault by
an acquaintance wound up under arrest herself on drug charges, James
City County police said.

Police charged Alvin E. Harding, 43, with possession of cocaine,
assault and battery, and abduction with intent to defile, said Maj.
Ken Middlebrook. Harding also was wanted in North Carolina for
violating his probation on an attempted rape conviction in 1994,
according to the North Carolina Department of Corrections.

Harding and the woman were taken to the Virginia Peninsula Regional
Jail, where he was held without bond; she was released Tuesday
afternoon. The woman was charged with possession of cocaine,
possession of marijuana and possession of a firearm while in
possession of cocaine.

The woman told police that Harding held her down and choked her and
told her he wanted sex, Middlebrook said.

Although she wasn't able to escape, the county's emergency
communications center received a 911 hang-up call from the residence.
When a dispatcher called back and couldn't get a response, police were
sent.
