PERUVIAN DRUG WAR TALLY

LIMA -- Peruvian police seized a total of one ton of cocaine paste and
arrested 59 people between January and August in the coca-producing region
of the Andean province of Ayacucho, 360 miles southeast of Lima, a local
paper reported Sunday.

In anti-drug operations conducted during that period, the police also
seized six vehicles used by the drug dealers operating in the region and
destroyed six coca processing plants, the El Comercio daily said.

The police also confiscated 500 kilograms of chemicals used in drug
manufacturing and 47 kilograms of cocaine sulfate.
