SUSPECT SHOT DURING DRUG STING

A man was shot Sunday by a Department of Public Safety officer in
southwest Houston during an undercover drug operation.

The 53-year-old man, whose name was not released, was in stable
condition at Ben Taub Hospital with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

The shooting occurred during a joint operation of the DPS and agents
of the Drug Enforcement Administration, said Houston police spokesman
Fred King.

Undercover officers arranged to buy marijuana from the man and another
person about 4:30 p.m. in the parking lot of a warehouse in the 2500
block of Bartlett near Kirby and the Southwest Freeway.

After the agents exchanged cash for 15 pounds of marijuana, other
officers moved in and ordered the men to put their hands up.

One man complied, but the other reached for his fannypack, King
said.

Lt. Philip Goodwin fired once, striking the man in the upper left
abdomen. Goodwin has been with the DPS for 29 years.

King said there was no gun in the fannypack, only cash.

The shooting is being investigated by the homicide and internal
affairs divisions of the Houston Police Department, the Harris County
District Attorney's Office and the Texas Rangers.
