LOW PROFILE AT PARK PROTEST

NORWICH police a planning a low profile at a pro-cannabis demo this weekend.

Officers will be on patrol at Chapelfield Gardens for the "Smokey Bears'
Picnic" but there will be no repeat of the scenes at a recent Reclaim the
Streets march. Police from across the county were drafted in to monitor the
anti-car protest, prompting a barrage of criticism.

Chief Insp Adrian Ewing said officers would be on patrol at Chapelfield
Gardens on Sunday, but actual numbers would depend on how many people turned up.

He added the division's decision to maintain a low-key presence was not
related to the criticism it received over its handling of the Reclaim the
Streets demo.

The flyers claim cannabis will be handed out to those in "medical need", but
Chief (Insp Ewing warned any illegal behaviour would not be tolerated. "If
people are dealing cannabis resin in the park they can expect to be dealt with."
