POLICEMAN LEAPT THROUGH WINDOW TO THWART ESCAPE

DRUGS squad officer Nigel Gillick jumped through a car window to put
on the hand brake and prevent the driver escaping.

Police later found cannabis resin worth 2700 pounds concealed in the
Ford Escort car, Norwich Crown Court heard.

Driver Richard Gibbs had been released from jail less than three
months earlier. He also had a conviction for selling cannabis in St
Leonard's Road, Norwich, in 1991.

Yesterday, Gibbs, a jobless heroin addict of Barton Close, Paston
Ridings, Peterborough was jailed for two years.

He was in breach of his prison licence and had admitted possessing
cannabis resin with intent to supply.

Prosecutor Charles Kellett, said in May 7, plain clothes drugs squad
officers had been in Queen's Road area of Norwich.

When a marked police car sounding its two-tone horn arrived on the
scene, Gibbs, who was at the unction with hall Road, started to move
off.

Det Con Gillick the "dove through the front near side passenger
window, was able to get inside and yank on the hand brake."

By the time he had stopped the car it had gone round a keep left
bollard with his legs dangling out of the window.

A total of one and a half pounds of cannabis was later found in the
boot and concealed in a wing of the car.

Gibbs told police he had borrowed the car and did not know about the
concealed drugs.

He did not know that Mr Gillick was a police officer and accelerated
away thinking he was being attacked.

John Farmer, for Gibbs, said he had been holding the cannabis for
someone else.
