MCCONAUGHEY ARRESTED

AUSTIN (AP) -- Actor Matthew McConaughey was released from jail Monday
after he was arrested in an early morning disturbance at his home in which
police said he was dancing naked and playing bongo drums.

McConaughey, 29, was arrested at his home around 3 a.m. and booked into the
Travis County Jail on suspicion of possession of marijuana, possession of
drug paraphernalia and resisting transportation. He was charged only with
resisting transportation, a Class A misdemeanor, said Austin police.

The native Texan, star of Dazed and Confused and EDtv, was released on a
$1,000 personal recognizance bond.

Officials said Municipal Judge Penny Wilcov dismissed the drug charges
because they were invalid under law and not supported by the facts of the
case.

Joe Turner, McConaughey's lawyer, said the police illegally searched the
actor's home and used excessive force.

McConaughey, a 1993 graduate of the University of Texas, would not comment
on the charges.

"I don't want to rent a place there, but it was a nice stay for a night,"
he said of his time in jail. Before leaving in his lawyer's car,
McConaughey flashed the Hook 'em Horns hand sign.

Police said they were called to McConaughey's home in west Austin after
receiving a complaint of loud music. Police saw him through a window naked
and playing drums and another man dancing and clapping.

In an affidavit, Officer Michael Olson said the actor tried to push the
policeman, but Olson grabbed McConaughey's arm, twisted it around his back
and handcuffed him. When McConaughey would not sit down, the officer
brought him down by pushing on his neck, and then McConaughey struggled all
the way to the police car, Olson said. The other suspect was not detained.
