LIBS TO VOTE AGAINST SHOOTING GALLERY

The New South Wales Liberal Party today moved to block legislation allowing
the establishment of the state's first legalised heroin shooting gallery.

At a party room meeting, members were told they would not be able to have a
conscience vote on the issue, which was expected to be debated in the Upper
House tomorrow.

Members who have previously spoken in support of the trial program will now
have to cross the floor or abstain from voting.

It is understood up to six members are in support of the controversial
legislation, which will allow a heroin injecting room to be established in
Kings Cross around February next year.

But the legislation is expected to gain enough support in the Upper House to
be passed with the majority of crossbenchers indicating they would support
the government's proposal.
