HOTLIST: DRUG ABUSE

Office of National Drug Control Policy -- www.whitehousedrugpolicy.gov/

Here's the central command post for America's war on drugs. The ONDCP's web
site is full of statistics, information about specific drugs and white
papers on different aspects of fighting drug abuse on the national level,
as well as examples of promotional efforts, such as this ad featuring
Houston-based tennis star Venus Williams. [Big picture of ad is shown.]

D.A.R.E. America -- www.dare-america.com/

The Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, or DARE, is aimed at educating
young children before they're exposed to drug culture. This site has three
separate areas -- for kids, their parents and educators.

Timothy Leary -- www.leary.com/

Timothy Leary died in 1996, but he continues to be a primary icon of the
drug culture. This site continues to be updated after his death, and now
includes information from the files kept on him by the FBI.

Partnership for a Drug-Free America -- www.drugfreeamerica.org/

The Partnership for a Drug-Free America is a group of communications
professionals and companies who use the media to teach a negative message
about drugs. They're the ones responsible for the now-classic "this is your
brain on drugs" commercials.

High Times -- www.hightimes.com/

High Times magazine is one of the few publications that openly condones
drug use, and what's amazing is that it is celebrating its 25th anniversary
this year. This site features articles from the magazine, as well as
information about its founding and mission.

Drug Street Slang -- www.addictions.com/slang.htm

The underground world of drug use has its own language. Here's an
exhaustive and frequently updated list of terms and what they mean. Note
that different words may have alternate meanings in different communities.

Trip Reports -- www.lycaeum.org/drugs/trip.report/

This site posts detailed descriptions of drug experiences by users. Some
are written in an almost detached, clinical way, while others wax
rhapsodic. While many of the postings here glorify drug use, there are also
some harrowing tales of trips gone bad.

Web of Addictions -- www.well.com/user/woa/

Looking for the unvarnished truth about any drug, from tobacco to heroin?
This site has an incredible amount of data about all kinds of abused
substances, as well as links to sites with more information.

Frontline: Snitch -- www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/snitch/

Here's a companion Web site to Frontline's compelling story about the use
of paid informants in the war on drugs. The site offers an unblinking look
at how prosecutors are using informants, sometimes putting the wrong people
behind bars as a result.
