CHRIST THE REDEEMER TRUSTEES STILL STUDYING DARE PROGRAM

Christ the Redeemer School Division has suspended a drug prevention program
in the Foothills area until it receives more information and direction from
school councils.

Christ the Redeemer's Okotoks trustee David Lunn informed the board at its
Nov. 13 meeting that the division's Foothills Ward has decided to suspend
the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program.

"The Ward Committee has decided to suspend the use of the DARE program
until further information is available as well as recommendations from
school councils," Lunn read to trustees.

He was reading from the minutes of the Foothills Ward Committee's Oct. 18
meeting.

DARE is a program which has an RCMP constable in the classroom teaching
students about drug prevention self-esteem and treating others with
self-respect.

The minutes from the ward committee meeting also state research from the
division's Controversial Materials Review Committee indicates the DARE
program has no effects or a slightly negative one on students.

The program is taught at Foothills School Division schools as a result of
that division and local municipalities contributing $64,000 to help pay the
salary of the RCMP constable.

Christ the Redeemer Division opted not to pay the $10,000 being asked as
its share for the constable's salary. As a result the program is not being
taught to the division's High River and Okotoks schools at this time.

Meanwhile, Christ the Redeemer continues to have the program taught at St.
Anthony's school in Drumheller.

Christ the Redeemer superintendent of schools Ron Wallace said the St.
Anthony's Ward committee has "local autonomy" and has chosen to have the
DARE program at the school.

In the St. Anthony's Ward Committee minutes of Oct. 21, it states members
of the controversial material committee will be invited to the next ward
meeting to discuss various issues regarding the program.

Christ the Redeemer has not closed the door on the DARE program for its
High River and Okotoks schools. It is awaiting word on a grant from
Windsong Children's Services to pay for some or all of its $10,000 share.

The Foothills Ward Committee meetings are not open to the public.
