SAD STORY IS SHOCKING

Thank you for the front-page story by June Rich about the fatal "Trek from
jail." The poignant details of how a legally blind man without any money
and without a ride was "mistakenly" released from the County Jail only to
be killed as he attempted to walk the four miles of Highway 1 to San Luis
Obispo leaves me in shock.

Sheriff Pat Hedges' comments in the paper do not exonerate him from
cupability.

At the very least, a grand jury investigation is warranted to search for
some fundamental solutions.
