NO FREE RIDES
Several facts have been omitted from The Tribune's article and subsequent
letters concerning the County Jail. Persons in custody are not limited to
one phone call. Once a person is released, they have telephones available
to them. The man who was recently struck and killed after being released
had money with him. If he had no one to pick him up, why did he not call
for a taxi?
People walk, jog and ride bicycles every day on Highway 1 without incident.
Once a person is released from the County Jail, the Sheriff's Department's
responsibility for them ends. If The Tribune believes the Sheriff's
Department should provide rides for all persons released from custody,
perhaps the same benefit of a free ride should be provided for anyone who
chooses to walk on Highway 1? I think not.
