EX-RESIDENCE STUDENT DECIDES AGAINST APPEAL

Former MacKenzie House resident, Derek Stapleton, has decided not to file
an appeal to UNB President, Elizabeth Parr-Johnston, over his eviction from
residence because of alleged marijuana use in his room.

Stapleton's decision came after a discussion with John Craighead, UNB's
Associate Director Residential Life.

"Craighead agreed to give me visitation rights in MacKenzie House after
Christmas and I am very pleased with that," Stapleton told the Brunswickan
this week.

"Craighead said he would talk with Chris Mercer, the Don of MacKenzie
House, to see if it was all right and apparently Mercer agreed," Stapleton
said.

After thinking about it, Stapleton said his only reason for filing his
appeal now would be to get his visitation rights back.

After settling into an apartment near the UNB campus following his
eviction, Stapleton said he is now pleased with his situation. He does not
plan to continue with a meal plan at McConnell Hall, but it now looks like
he might begin playing intramural volleyball for MacKenzie House in January.

Craighead, however, has a slightly different take on Stapleton's situation.
"I met with Stapleton and it was agreed that we would evaluate the
situation after Christmas and arrive at a final decision about his
visitation rights then," Craighead told the Brunswickan.

"The Don of MacKenzie House, Chris Mercer, is supportive of granting
Stapleton visitation rights provided things go well between now and
Christmas," Craighead explained.

"I told Derek to come and see me as soon as he gets back after Christmas
and we would make a final decision then," he said.
