COLOMBIA FORMS ELITE FORCE
BOGOTA, Colombia - Colombia on Tuesday activated a new 4,000-soldier elite
force intended to respond rapidly to leftist guerrilla attacks.
The force is made up of soldiers from units around the country. In recent
years the Colombian military has suffered some of its worst losses when
undermanned military bases were overrun by massive guerrilla attacks before
reinforcements could arrive.
"This new force is prepared to act in the jungles or the plains ... in any
condition and in any moment," said President Andres Pastrana.
