OPPOSITION DENIES HEROIN INJECTING ROOMS BREACH TREATIES

The Federal Opposition has rejected claims that planned heroin
injecting rooms would breach international treaties.

Shadow Attorney-General, Robert McClelland, says the rooms will be
conducted under strict conditions.

"They are going to be designed to focus people into rehabilitation
schemes," Mr McClelland said.

"It is not going to be simply giving out drugs from the corner
store.

"The treaties make provision for such research and such trials so, I
mean, I don't think and indeed the best advice from experts is that
these treaties won't impeed the drug trial and indeed that was the
advice I received from the Minister for Foreign Affairs."
