ORDER JUDGE JUDY TO DROP HATRED

Mothers Against Misuse and Abuse has worked for almost two decades to teach
people how to reduce the risks of all drug use, using education about
personal responsibility and decision making.

Our group is shocked at the recent remarks of TV's "Judge Judy" regarding
intravenious drug users. She told an Australian audience that instead of
attempting to control AIDS and hepatitis among drug addicts, we should
"give them dirty needles and let them die." (A dangerous step along the
path to dehumanization, Nov 30) This remark indicates both ignorance and
hatred.

Judy Sheindlin and her kind may not be aware that those who become exposed
to these diseases often pass them on to others not involved in drug use,
such as mates, children, and health care workers. Over 1,000 nurses and
doctors have contracted AIDS or hepatitis as a result of accidental needle
sticks.

Government research has shown that needle exchange programs not only help
reduce the spread of disease, but these programs also offer a safe place
for users to learn about other good health practices and lead many to seek
treatment. These are real people we are talking about here.
