GRANNY, 79, BUSTED FOR DOPE SMUGGLING

TORONTO -- Canada Customs and the RCMP are still shaking their heads
after a 79-year-old Toronto great-grandmother was nabbed at Pearson
airport on drug-smuggling charges.

"She's the oldest person we've arrested for smuggling," RCMP Staff
Sgt. Bill Matheson said of a woman dubbed the "granny smuggler."

"We've never arrested anyone older in my 30 years."

Matheson said a woman was arrested last week after arriving on an Air
Canada flight from Jamaica.

Police said the woman, who's collecting the old age pension and
welfare, turns 80 in four months.

Matheson said 450 grams of marijuana packed in two bricks, worth about
$9,000, was found hidden under clothes in a suitcase.

Customs spokesman Duncan Smith said an elderly woman was referred for
a secondary check after arriving at Terminal 2.

"She came to our attention because she was acting extremely nervous,"
Smith said. "Our officers noticed she was very, very nervous."

Matheson said officers aren't sure for who or where the drugs were
destined.

The Mounties and customs officers believe the senior citizen may be
the oldest person arrested in Canada on drug-smuggling charges.

"This is very rare for us," Matheson said. "Drug smugglers are usually
a lot younger."

"She's the oldest we've arrested in all my years," Smith said. "We've
never had anyone this age."

Tamazena Nelson faces charges of importing a controlled
substance.

She was released on bail.
