ANTI-BOOZE, DRUGS PARALLELS

Ann Criswell's Dec. 15 Chronicle article on food throughout the
century gave insight into the effectiveness (and lack thereof) of laws
against intoxicating substances. She said that in the 1920s
Prohibition greatly influenced the decade, but that many people drank
more than they ever had in spite of the new laws. The magazine Bon
Appetit reported that 70 percent of America's favorite cocktails were
created during Prohibition and characterized the decade as "cocktails,
cars and candy bars." How can Americans not see the parallel between
Prohibition and the war on drugs?
