YOUNG DRUG COURIERS MURDERED IN KILDARE

Call For Crackdown On Gangland Chiefs

A demand for tougher action by the government and gardai to crack down
on major criminals was made today in the wake of the murder of two
young drug couriers in the Republic.

Dubliners Patrick Murray (19) from Cole Park Drive, Ballyfermot, and
Darren Carey, (20) from Islandbridge Court, were shot in the head and
dumped in the Grand Canal near Sallins, Co Kildare.

Senior Gardai sources said the two men, who were friends, were killed
because they owed money to a drugs baron.

They became the seventh victims of gangland killings linked to drugs
in the Republic in the past 12 months.

The Fine Gale spokesman on justice Jim Higgins said: "It is quite
obvious that the stage of tit-for-tat gangland killings which
characterised the latter half of 1999 is about to continue in 2000.

"There is an urgent need for the Minister for Justice to sit down with
Gardai chiefs to work out a strategy to stamp out what is a well
orchestrated murder campaign".

It is believed that the two men were killed by a professional hitman
on the orders of a vicious Ballyfermot drugs dealer who is trying to
establish himself as the main gangland figure in the west of the city.

Gardai said that they had run up significant debts with the drugs
baron and had failed to meet a payment deadline.

Both men travelled to the continent last month to import heroin to try
to pay off their debts.

Murray was arrested at Dublin Airport on December 3 after he got off a
flight from Amsterdam. A half kilo of heroin in his possession was
seized. He was charged and released on bail. He was reported missing
on December 28.

Carey was reported missing on December 30.

It is believed they were shot elsewhere before being dumped in the
Canal.

Murray had been stripped and is believed to have been interrogated
before being shot.

His body was recovered from the Canal last Sunday after it was spotted
by a passer-by.

The fully clothed body of Carey was found by Gardai divers yesterday
as they searched the Canal for a murder weapon.
