JAIL GUARD CHARGED WITH DRUG TRAFFICKING

A KRCC Guard Charged With Drug Trafficking Will Stay In Jail Until His
Next Court Appearance.

Jordan Douglas Woods, 44, was arrested Monday night after being
stopped in the 2300 block of Tranquille Road. Woods works as a guard
at the Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre. A quantity of drugs was
seized from a vehicle.

Officers also searched a home in Red Lake and discovered an indoor
marijuana growing operation.

Woods faces charges of possession of cocaine, methamphetamine and
marijuana for the purpose of trafficking, production of marijuana and
unsafe storage of a firearm.

He appeared in provincial court briefly Tuesday clad in jeans and a
blue Gold's Gym sweat shirt -- not the corrections uniform he was
wearing when arrested.

Woods was ordered to stay in jail until his next court appearance
Friday, when it's expected his lawyer will seek bail. Until then,
Woods will be kept in the Kamloops RCMP city cells -- not at KRCC.

Federal Crown prosecutor Gordon Hoffman said he will oppose requests
to have Woods released from custody.

RCMP Cpl. Al Soneff said the arrest follows a lengthy investigation by
members of the city detachment's special projects unit.

Police don't know where the drugs were headed, Soneff
said.

KRCC director Peter Tilt said staff will conduct an internal
investigation, but nothing suggests any staff member has brought drugs
into the prison.

"We still rely on the integrity and discretion of the officers. The
reality is, the vast majority do their jobs with professionalism and
integrity," he said.

"There are charges and a court process and (Woods) is innocent until
proven guilty. Obviously we are looking into any and all implications
of his position and the nature of the charges."

Tilt said employees are usually suspended from duty any time criminal
charges are laid, but no decision has yet been made about Woods'
employment status.
