VANDALISM CHARGES PENDING AGAINST SEN. GRAMS' SON

ANOKA, Minn. (AP) -- The son of Minnesota Sen. Rod Grams faces possible
charges for vandalizing property at a convenience store, police said Thursday.

Police were dispatched to a SuperAmerica store around 10:30 p.m. Saturday
in response to a report that Morgan Grams might have damaged property, said
Capt. Tom Anderson.

Grams, 21, had been drinking and either knocked over merchandise or damaged
the door of a cooler, police said. He was not arrested, but charges could
be filed next week after an investigation determines the amount of damage
to property, Anderson said.

Morgan Grams was picked up at the store by his father. The situation did
not warrant an arrest, and police often notify a parent or legal guardian
in such incidents, Anderson said.

" He was on foot and he' d been drinking. There was no basis for arrest,
and we need to make sure the individual' s safety is taken care of, "
Anderson said. " We often release them to a responsible adult, most likely
a family member."

Morgan Grams has had other brushes with the law.

On Wednesday, he was arraigned on a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge
and chose not to enter a plea. He was stopped in July in a borrowed rental
vehicle after his father called the Anoka County sheriff for help finding
his son. A deputy found 10 bags of marijuana and beer cans in the vehicle.

One of the passengers was convicted of a felony drug charge because nine
bags were found on him. Although the other bag was found under the driver'
s seat, neither Grams nor the other teen-age passenger was questioned
initially.

The incident prompted an inquiry that concluded that police work was sloppy
but that the Republican senator did not ask for special favors for his son.

The younger Grams also is set to appear in Anoka County District Court on
Jan. 19 for a separate incident, on a felony charge of unauthorized use of
a motor vehicle.
