IT'S EXTREMELY WRONG TO WISH ANYBODY DEAD

I MUST respond to J Hutt's letter (January 10) and to that from Alun Buffry
(January 11).

The first I can understand and agree with. The second, I cannot understand
and disagree with.

The main thing to me, with regard to illegal drugs, is that it is against
the law to supply them.

We all know from media coverage that the use of illegal drugs can destroy
families and can sometimes be the cause of rape, murder, robbery or
violence. Norwich's new police chief (Evening News, January 10) refers to
the "bawdy behaviour" at Bethel Street police station and rightly says it
is time to move on.

We also hear that nationwide, the police are short of recruits.

Why? It appears to me that the main reason is because the modern police
force are so restricted in doing their job - to catch, prove guilty and
convict.

It would be interesting to see a contract of employment for a police
officer today.
