COPS: DOUGHNUT SHOP DOUBLED AS DRUG LAB

Jan. 21 - ENGLEWOOD - You apparently could get more than a sugar high at an
Englewood doughnut shop that has been closed down, authorities say.

"They were cooking doughnuts in the front and "speed' in the back," said
Englewood police Sgt. Tom Scheider. Conducting a "no-knock" drug raid Sunday
night at J&S Donuts, 4168 S. Broadway, authorities said they uncovered a
methamphetamine lab in a back room. Four people were arrested.

"There were all the chemicals necessary for a full-functioning lab," said
Detective Joni Gordanier of the South Metro Drug Task Force. "I believe they
were doing it at all hours of the day. We hit it at the right time. They
happened to be in the middle of a "cook.' " Authorities seized enough
material to produce 3 pounds of speed worth an estimated $30,000.

Shop owner Michael Watson, 48, and Kellie Griebel, 35, an employee, were
jailed on suspicion of manufacturing drugs. Another employee, Donald
Naffziger, 45, and Rodney Fouts, 35, who apparently had been staying at the
shop, were freed pending investigation.

Watson, who has owned the shop since last year, has a police record dating
to 1984. It includes a 1994 arrest in Lakewood for possession of dangerous
drugs and narcotics equipment.

Tri-County Health Department officials closed the shop Wednesday for
health-code violations.
