GIRL GANG

Criminals even when they don't look like we expect

Two of four Kingwood girls accused in a series of armed robberies have
been sentenced to seven years in prison. Jail time, rather than
probation, was entirely appropriate.

The case, in which the high school students robbed convenience stores
for drug money, shocked Houstonians and drew international attention,
mainly because the defendants are girls and because they are from a
well-to-do suburb where this sort of thing is not supposed to happen.

The young women sought probation, telling reporters they had learned
their lesson, having been locked up already for several months with a
lot of "criminals."

They just didn't get it. Those who rob stores at gunpoint, put
innocent people in danger and buy and consume drugs are criminals --
even if they aren't "urban" youth of certain demographics. We suspect
now it will sink in.
