FBI MAY GET MORE POWER

WASHINGTON -- A federal commission Tuesday recommended giving the FBI
control over the enforcement functions of the Bureau of Alcohol,
Tobacco and Firearms -- now part of the Treasury Department -- and the
anti-drug efforts of the Drug Enforcement Administration.

A similar move was considered and rejected during President Clinton's
first term.

Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers and Attorney General Janet Reno
said they would study the commission's recommendations.

The Commission on the Advancement of Law Enforcement, headed by former
FBI and CIA Director William H. Webster, said federal law enforcement
authority needs to be consolidated.

The 185-page report said lack of coordination among law enforcement
agencies makes the United States vulnerable to global crime and terrorism.
