MEXICO'S DRUG PROGRESS INDUCES SKEPTICISM

Re: "Mexico boasts its progress against drugs is significant" (A-section,
Jan. 27):

After reading your article on Mexico's progress in the drug wars, I was
laughing so hard it hurt. Mexico is working on this problem only enough to
receive money from the United States. We won't hear any more about it until
next year, when the Mexican government wants more money.

As a guide to Mexico's progress, maybe we should use the amount of drugs
confiscated at our border. If Mexico is confiscating as much as our border
enforcement agencies, then it is doing something; if not, take off the gloves.

The Mexican government does nothing to stem the flow of illegal
immigration, allows raw sewage to seep across the border and now tells us
what a great job it's doing on stopping the flow of illegal drugs into this
country.

Let's hold the money back for a couple of years and use it at our borders
to make it tougher for people, drugs or sewage to get in.
