TRUSTEES TO DISCUSS POLICY ALLOWING LOCKER SEARCHES

School trustees will discuss a policy in the coming weeks allowing
officials to search lockers for drugs or weapons.

Trustee Kim Van Tine first sparked the issue in December. Trustees
agreed to get legal opinions before opting for a change in policy.

"After getting three legal opinions, there seems to be an agreement
that the lockers belong to the school district. It's not public
property, it's school district property," said trustee Lal Sharma.

The policy will allow officials to search students' lockers without
notice, if it's believed drugs or weapons are being hidden.

"After thinking about it a great deal, I agree with it. I think this
policy will be reasonable," Sharma added.

The issue will be raised at tonight's board meeting as notice of
motion. Trustees will discuss the policy at the Feb. 28 meeting.
