ALCOHOL, DRUGS A FATAL MIX

A deadly cocktail of alcohol and drugs - many of them prescribed by doctors
- - affected drivers in 9 per cent of fatal accidents in Australia, a report
shows.

Another 6.5 per cent of drivers involved in accidents causing fatalities
were affected by drugs alone.

The study by Olaf Drummer of the Department of Forensic Medicine at
Melbourne’s Monash University highlights a growing trend to mix drugs with
alcohol.

The research is supported by another study of 2,500 injured drivers by
pharmacologists at the University of Adelaide, which found that 10.3 per
cent tested positive to a drug other than alcohol - most commonly cannabis,
used by 7.1 per cent of the test, followed by ecstasy, cocaine and
amphetamines.
