QUEANBEYAN LIBS OPPOSE ACT INJECTING ROOM

The Queanbeyan branch of the Liberal Party has written to ACT Assembly
Members opposing the ACT's planned heroin injecting room.

Branch president Stephen Beer said, "We don't support it. We feel it is not
a good idea and we don't think it will do any good. We don't know whether
we can stop it or not, but unless you air your opinion you never get a
hearing."

Chief Minister Kate Carnell and Urban Services Minister Brendan Smyth split
with ACT Liberal Party policy last year to support the injecting-room trial.

But Mr Beer said the letters were not aimed at them.

The Federal Member for Eden-Monaro, Gary Nairn, said he had not lobbied
against the proposal because, "While I don't believe in the policy in
principle, I respect the ACT's democratically elected status."
