DARE TOURNAMENT ANOTHER SUCCESS
The sixth annual Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) Golf Tournament
at Pine Ridge Golf Club near Warkworth was another success.
For four years now, much of the success for the tournament has been the
responsibility of OPP Constable Angela Ward.
This year,138 golfers hit the Pine Ridge Golf Course under cloudy skies at
10 a.m. September 6. Each player anted up $80.
Cramahe Township Deputy Mayor Ray Kelly joined Police Committee member Rick
Saunders representing Cramahe Township.
Mayor Bill Finley and Councillor Ray Benns putted for Alnwick/Haldimand.
Hamilton Township's Councillor Gary Woods and Mayor Forrest Rowden played
18 holes.
Constable Ward was pleased with this year's tourney which fell six golfers
short of the record 144.
There were 141 prizes available to the lucky golfers and many of the holes
were sponsored.
In 2005, the tournament raised $11,500. The constable hoped to repeat that
this year.
The DARE program which operates in grade six classes across the county
costs $10-11 thousand to run.
The D.A.R.E. program was founded in Los Angeles in 1983 and moved to Canada
10 years later. The D.A.R.E. curriculum is designed to be taught by police
officers whose training and experience gave them the background needed to
answer the sophisticated questions often posed by young students about
drugs and crime.
This year, part of the money raised at the tournament will be used to
purchase a new drug board and display for the 608 students who will take
the program.
